This class will provide an introduction to the history, theology, and literature of Christianity from the Israel’s Scriptures or Old Testament to the formation of the New Testament canon to the development of major Christian doctrines, e.g. the Trinity, the person and work of Christ, the role of the Holy Spirit, the Atonement, the Sacraments, and consummation of salvation in Christ’s return and the resurrection of the dead. Thus, it is intended both for students who are Christian but want to understand where their church’s teachings about Jesus comes from and for students who are not Christian and have no background in Christianity but want to learn about its central beliefs and practices. It is, therefore, intended to be useful for, though not limited to, students whose majors are informed by or presuppose a knowledge of Christianity (e.g. English, history, philosophy, art history).
